"For twenty-seven years the native vines of North Georgia
have been my inspiration and resource. From them I weave
baskets, birdhouses, framed mirrors, Christmas trees,
cornucopias, purses, hats, etc. I prefer kudzu vine for its
flexibility, kindness to hands and availability. The others
are good too - wisteria, honeysuckle, grapevines, Virginia
creeper, and bittersweet. My work has been exhibited
nationally in galleries, museums, upscale gift shops and art
centers and I've taught many workshops all over North
Georgia, sharing weaving techniques in schools, art camps
and garden clubs. Since 1996 I have enjoyed teaching several
times every year at the John C. Campbell Folk School in
Brasstown, North Carolina. Recently students have been
coming to my studio for one-on-one instruction.
The fiber art jewelry started as relaxation and now is an
important part of my work, even incorporating kudzu vine in
some of it. I draw upon my childhood training from my mother
and her sisters who taught me knitting, crocheting, and
weaving. Now I use imported Irish waxed linen cord,
crystals, gem stones, sterling silver, brass and copper
charms in several styles of necklaces and matching earrings.
Currently I have been making my own beads for the jewelry,
using the copper enameling technique.
The two parts of my work are really alike, for I consider
the vines as fibers since I can manipulate them practically
anywhere I wish. I feel closest to the Creator when I am out
in the woods gathering the vines to begin my work."
